Stay Social While Social Distancing

OVERVIEW
In March 2020, the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, universities nationwide were required to pivot to remote learning and programming. Within the Office of Student Life at The Ohio State University, this meant exploring alternative methods to support students in a new, predominantly virtual environment. As a result of the events happening in the world, students were left feeling isolated and stripped of their college experience. Our task was to remind students of the ways that they could still connect with peers and remain social while abiding by the health guidelines that were in place at the time.
SOLUTION
A campus-wide campaign was put into place with a goal of encouraging students to stay connected with friends and classmates by utilizing the new digital tools we were learning about. With a tagline of “Stay Social While Social Distancing”, I was tasked with creating the campaign’s visuals. I wanted the graphics to convey a positive energy and tried to achieve this through the use of colorful illustrations and illustrated typography.
SOCIAL MEDIA
Due to the majority of students shifting to virtual learning and not being on campus, our main priority was to push the campaign out via the Office of Student Life social channels. Those social platforms were Twitter and Instagram. The graphics were accompanied by captions that offered ideas of how to stay social and call to actions for the users to interact with the post.
DIGITAL SIGNAGE
While most students went home, some students didn’t have that choice and had to stay on campus. That being said, it was still important to share our message across the campus digital signage.
